The research presented at the IDEAGOV International Conference on “Asymmetric Federalism: The Perils and Advantages of Asymmetric Decentralization Arrangements”, held in Santiago de Compostela on November 5–6, 2025, has now contributed to a special issue of The Annals of Regional Science.

The special issue, “Asymmetric Federalism: The Perils and Advantages of Asymmetric Decentralization Arrangements,” brings together comparative and interdisciplinary research examining how asymmetric decentralization shapes territorial inequalities, fiscal outcomes, regional performance, political competition, and governance.

The collection includes research covering a wide range of contexts, including Spain, France, Italy, South Africa, and other decentralized systems, providing new evidence on the opportunities and challenges associated with differentiated governance arrangements.

The special issue is edited by Ignacio Lago (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Santiago Lago-Peñas (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela), Jorge Martinez-Vazquez (Georgia State University), and Agnese Sacchi (University of Urbino).

With several articles already published, the collection represents an important outcome of IDEAGOV’s international conference and strengthens the Center’s contribution to the academic debate on federalism, decentralization, and territorial governance.
