Place: CEA – Centro de Estudos Avanzados, Parque de Vista Alegre, Santiago de Compostela

Date: 9 March 2026

On 9 March 2026, the Centro de Estudos Avanzados (CEA) in Santiago de Compostela will host the international conference “Democracy and Global Governance: 21st Century Challenges”, bringing together leading scholars and institutional representatives to discuss some of the political and governance challenges of our time. The event will count with the collaboration and support of the Foro Económico de Galicia

The conference will open at 16:00 and will feature two high-level panels addressing key issues affecting contemporary democracies and the global order.

The first panel“Democracy and its Discontents: Understanding Polarisation and Political Conflict” will include presentations by Jonathan Rodden (Stanford University), who will analyse the roots of partisan hostility, and Pablo Beramendi (Duke University), who will examine the current state of democracy in the United States from a comparative perspective. The panel will be discussed by María Luz Loureiro García (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela).

The second panel“The Global Turn: Unilateralism and Global Humanitarian Crises”, will address recent shifts in global governance. Erik Wibbels and Guy Grossman (University of Pennsylvania) will explore the consequences of unilateralism, reductions in international assistance, and the resulting challenges for refugee-hosting countries. Miram Hortas-Rico (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) will be the discussant for this panel.

This conference offers a valuable forum for academic debate and policy-oriented discussion on democracy, global governance, and international cooperation in an increasingly fragmented world.
